DIALOGUES is an expanded residency bringing together 12 composers and 12 moving-image makers to collaborate on the creation of new short films and original scores.
Developed from the NI Film Scoring School and building on two successful years at Ulster University Derry, in partnership with the Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny, the programme has evolved into a dynamic, cross-disciplinary exchange open to artists from all backgrounds. Moving-image participants may come from theatre, visual art, music, dance or literature (no prior filmmaking experience is required) while the composer strand welcomes music-makers at any stage, from classically trained to self-taught.
The programme unfolds across Ballycastle, Belfast, Derry/Londonderry and Letterkenny. Makers begin by developing moving-image work, gathering footage and shaping ideas. Composers then respond to these projects, developing original scores through a process that balances independent making with moments of exchange, conversation and collaboration.
This is a space for experimentation. The focus is not on perfection, but on process – testing ideas, taking creative risks, and discovering new ways of working both together and apart.
Participants are supported throughout by mentoring, industry insight and dedicated time to develop their practice, culminating in a live recording session with the Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble and a final public presentation of the completed works.
Led by Dumbworld’s award-winning Artistic Directors Brian Irvine (Ivor Novello-winning and multi-nominated) and John McIlduff (producer of The Flats, CPH:DOX winner), the programme features a guest faculty including Michael Keeney (two-time UK Music Producers Guild Award winner), Die Hexen (IFTA-winning and multi-nominated), Myrid Carten (BIFA-winning director of A Want in Her), David Holmes (BAFTA Craft Award winner for Killing Eve) and more to be announced.
24 creatives. 12 short films. 12 original scores. Presented together.

Note on fees:
This is the first year we’ve run a dedicated filmmaker strand. Because the programme spans multiple locations, we’ve kept the fee as accessible as possible while being honest about the travel commitment involved. We’re grateful in your understanding as we build something new.
Note on bursaries:
We acknowledge that financial constraints can pose challenges to accessing opportunities like this. We’re offering 1 – 2 bursaries per strand for those who need support. The bursary will cover the course fee. Bursary applications are treated in confidence. You’ll be asked to indicate if financial support is needed during the application process. Thanks to Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin for the provision of 1 bursary.
