THINGS WE THROW AWAY
Drive-by Shooting
Two old women are on a mission. The husband of one has been unfaithful. They have a gun and they’re ready to use it. Sisters in crime!
Cast: Sylvia O’Brien, Doreen Curran
Soundtrack: RTÉ Concert Orchestra – Fergus Sheil (conductor)
I Just Sell My Bananas
No tales to be told, no songs to sing, she just sells her bananas. She has kids to take care of and a husband in tow. Day in day out. The bananas, however, are relentlessly cheerful. They sing with a jazzy Latin pazzaz…
Cast: Sylvia O’Brien joined by the Banana chorus of Sarah Shine, Rachel Croash and Maria Kelly.
Ironing Board Blues
An old iron and ironing board are discarded on the street. Their best days are behind them. What a couple they once were like Fred and Ginger… steamy afternoons in shadowy backrooms.
Designed and animated by Niamh Lawlor
Sung by Doreen Curran
Soundtrack: RTÉ Concert Orchestra – Fergus Sheil (conductor)
Suck It In
A group of workers gather for a smoking break outside a building. They may be outcasts, sceptics, fools, but never alone. Comrades in arms. Troubles and worries all gone up in smoke. Five minutes of peace in a lifetime of pain.
Cast:Sylvia O’Brien, Doreen Curran and a specially created chorus of Belfast singers.
Soundtrack: RTÉ Concert Orchestra – Fergus Sheil (conductor)
Wake Up Son
A father tries to persuade his drunk son to get another round in but the son is fast asleep, as always… like when they would return from a day at the beach in his Ford Cortina.
Cast: Brendan Collins (Father)
Soundtrack: RTÉ Concert Orchestra – Fergus Sheil (conductor)
Things We Throw Away was commissioned as part of the Dublin City Public Art Programme with funding for the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government under the Per Cent for Art Scheme.
